The Night before the Revolution - Grand Ball 1789! pt 2

And in part 2 of my ball postings I would like to share some of the wonderful pictures captured by Jonas Radtke and tell you about the highlights of the evening!
Our theme was "the night before the revolution" - meaning to party like it was the very last time, to put on a mask and be as decadent as you wish!

Und im zweiten Teil meines Ballpostings berichte ich ueber die Highlights des Abends und zeige ein paar der wundervollen Bilder von Jonas Radtke!
Unser Thema war "die Nacht vor der Revolution" - also zu feiern, als ob es das letzte Mal waere, und dabei seine wahre Identitaet hinter einer Maske zu verbergen!
Hier eine Aussenaufnahme der Location, Schloss Koertlinghausen:

The first guests arrived for the champagne reception at 6pm.
Um 18 Uhr trafen die ersten Gaeste zum Sektempfang ein.

 

Our wonderful catering team made sure everyone indulged in a glass of bubbly, while we just looked around gazing at the multitude of costumes and masks! Our guests came from all parts of Germany, as well as Sweden, Italy and England!

Unser fabelhaftes Cateringteam versorgte alle Neuangekommenen mit Sekt, waehrend wir einfach den Anblick der vielen Kostueme und Masken genossen. Unsere Gaeste kamen aus allen Teilen Deutschlands, sowie aus Schweden, Italien, Holland und Grossbritannien!

Nur eines der vielen bezaubernden Kostueme, ueber und ueber mit Pailetten und Stickerei geschmueckt!

 Many guests opted for turkish/oriental dress.

Viele Gaeste erschienen in tuerkischen/orientalischen Kostuemen!

A rich buffet was served in the upstairs ballroom, including hot and cold dishes, cheese and desserts!
I even managed to try every dish myself, except for the meat dish of course!
The table decorations had been handmade by us and set up in the afternoon.

Ein reichhaltiges Buffet wurde im oberen Ballsaal serviert, bestehend aus kalten und warmen Speisen, Kaese und Desserts! Es gelang mir tatsaechlich jedes Gericht zu probieren, ausser dem Fleischgericht natuerlich! Die Tischdekorationen wurden von uns am Nachmittag selbst arrangiert und liebevoll im Schloss verteilt.

Our dinner was enhanced by Niels Badenhop and his amazing skills on the harp.

Zum Essen konnten wir das herrliche Harfenspiel von Niels Badenhop geniessen.

After dinner the official part of the evening was opened in the main ballroom, with a thoroughly divine performance by baroque dancers Doris and Niels. A feast for the eyes!!

Nach dem Dinner wurde der offizielle Teil des Abends im unteren Ballsaal eroeffnet, standesgemaess mit einer hinreissenden Barocktanznummer vorgefuehrt von Doris und Niels. Absolut unvergleichlich schoen! Ein magischer Moment!

Afterwards dance masters Caroline & Bert opened the dancefloor and gave detailed dance instructions so everybody could join in!

Anschliessend eroeffneten Tanzmeister Caroline & Bert den Tanz und gaben detaillierte Anleitung, so dass alle mittanzen konnten.

For those who were not up for dancing we prepared a gambling and smoking parlour.
Fuer die weniger tanzfreudigen Gaeste richteten wir ein Spielzimmer sowie einen Rauchsalon her.

And what would a decadent masked ball be without a bit of saucy entertainment? The art of burlesque is actually quite old with its origins in 16th and 17th popular theatre! So later in the evening we enjoyed a very special performance by German burlesque star Rose Rainbow!

Und was waere ein dekadenter Kostuemball ohne pikante Unterhaltung? Die Kunstform des Burlesktanzes ist in der Tat sehr alt, mit Urspruengen im Volkstheater des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts! Spaeter am Abend tanzte fuer uns Bayerns Burlesquesensation Rose Rainbow!

The dancing continued into the wee hours until closing time!
Getanzt wurde bis weit nach Mitternacht!

The Night before the Revolution - Grand Ball 1789! pt 1

On March 15th this year we hosted our grand costume ball themed "Night before the revolution 1789" at the romantic baroque castle in Koertlinghausen/Germany.
After over a year of planning the big day arrived really quicker than expected!
The magic of the castle set the scene for a wonderful night full of great masquerade costumes, champagne and dancing.

Am 15. Maerz diesen Jahres haben wir unseren grossen Kostuemball "Die Nacht vor der Revolution 1789" gefeiert. Unsere Location war das romantische Barockschloss Koertlinghausen in Ruethen/Westfalen.
Nach mehr als einem Jahr Planung kam der Tag dann viel schneller als erwartet!
Das herrliche Schloss war die perfekte Szenerie fuer einen magischen Abend voller fabelhafter Maskenkostueme, Champagner und Tanz!

First of all I'll tell you about my own outfit for the night!
After a LOT of pondering I chose the goddess Diana as my masque costume. Diana was a popular 18th century costume choice for young European ladies and was usually pulled of with a white dress, a leopard skin, a bow and a crescent moon tiara. Perfect for me, since I was extremely skint on time!
Here's just one of my many inspiration pictures:

Zuerst erzaehle ich kurz ueber mein eigenes Outfit fuer den Abend!
Nach sehr viel hin- und herueberlegen habe ich mich fuer die Goettin Diana entschieden! Diana war ein populaeres Kostuem bei jungen Europaerinnen, vor allem des 18. Jahrhunderts, wie auf unzaehligen Gemaelden zu finden. Gewoehnlich bestehend aus einem weissem Kleid, einem Leopardenfell, einem Bogen und einer Halbmondtiara. Perfekt fuer mich, da wieder die Zeit knapp wurde!
Hier nur eines meiner vielen Inspirationsbilder:

As we had a french revolution theme I chose to make a white silk chemise gown with a fitted back and accessorize the heck out of it.
My favourite costume piece were definitely my custom made deer antlers, made by Hysteria Machine! I enjoyed wearing them so much!!
The dress was super quickly put together, decorated with self-fabric ruffles and worn over chemise, white petticoat and short stays (for comfort!). The stripey silk belt is an old accessory from my wardrobe and the crescent moon tiara was made by me. The jewels I wore are a beautiful 18th century reproduction from Dames a la Mode. I completed the outfit with a cheap costume shop bow and a new pair of black leather Kensingtons from American Duchess.
Since the black leather mask I bought on ebay didn't fit me, I had to improvise with a black lace mask, homemade from scraps and glued to my face with eyelash glue! 

Unserem Revolutionsthema entsprechend habe ich ein Chemisenkleid mit glattem Ruecken aus weisser Habotaiseide gemacht und mit passenden Accessoires versehen.
Mein liebstes war ganz zweifellos das Geweih von Hysteria Machine! 
Das Kleid war schnell fertig genaeht, geschmueckt mit ein paar Rueschen und getragen ueber Chemise, weissem Unterrock und Kurzmieder (um der Bequemlichkeit Willen!). Der gestreifte Seidenguertel ist ein altes Stueck aus meinem Fundus und die Halbmondtiara ist selbstgemacht. Meine Halskette mit passenden Ohrringen ist ein handgemachtes Set von Dames a la Mode. Das Outfit wurde komplettiert mit einem kleinen Bogen aus dem Kostuemladen und einem neuen Paar schwarzer Lederschuhe mit Strass-Schnallen.
Da mir meine bestellte Ballmaske nicht gepasst hat, musste ich mit einer selbstgemachten Spitzenmaske improvisieren, die mit Wimpernkleber direkt aufs Gesicht geklebt wurde.

The Duke of Wellington Ball, London May 2013

Finally an excuse to make a new Regency frock (after how many years? I forgot!) came to me in the shape of the Duke of Wellington Ball on 31st May 2013, hosted at the City of London Club.
I decided to keep my dress simple and managable, with May being a completely mental month with hardly a day off!
So let's start with the inspiration for my dress! I created a pinboard with dresses I liked over on Pinterest and finally picked this one:

Ein Grund um ein neues Empirekleid zu machen kam im Mai daher in Form einer Einladung zum Duke of Wellington Ball im City of London Club.
Wegen der unfassbaren Fuelle an Arbeit im Mai habe ich mich fuer ein schlichtes elegantes Kleid entschieden, das erst vier Tage vor dem Event angefangen werden konnte.
Beginnen wir mit der Inspiration fuer das Kleid! Ich habe ein Pinboard auf Pinterest angelegt mit Kleidern, die mir gefallen und mich schliesslich fuer dieses entschieden:

I love the simple grecian style of this outfit, the soft and drapey fabric and the little lace sleeves, perfect to hide my tattoos under! I picked heavy crepe back silk satin and leftover cotton lace from the stockroom. The pattern was created based on my Queen Louise pattern with a newly draped front piece to achieve the loose slightly floppy look. The dress has a small puddle train like the fashion plate suggests and closes at the back with hooks and eyes. I purchased brass stampings in gold for the shoulder and underbust embellishments (so very greek!!). Most of the dress was machine sewn as this was started about 4 days before the event with handsewn details, and was finished the morning of the ball.

Ich liebe den schlichten altgriechischen Stil des Kleides, den weich fallenden Stoff und die kleinen Spitzenaermel, perfekt um Tattoos darunter zu verstecken! Im Stoffladen habe ich schweren Seidensatin gekauft, kombiniert mit einem Leinenfutter und Baumwollspitze fuer die Aermel und den Einsatz.
Der Schnitt basiert auf meinem "Koenigin Luise" Kleid, mit einem neu drapierten Vorderteil, um den lose fallenden Look des Modekupfers zu kopieren. Der Rock hat eine kleine Schleppe wie auf dem Bild illustriert, Schultern und Unterbrustband sind mit gestanzten Metallelementen geschmueckt (so griechisch!!). Das Kleid schliesst hinten mit Haken & Oesen und ist groesstenteils maschinengenaeht -kein Wunder in der kurzen Zeit!!- und ist erst am Morgen des Events fertig geworden!

Belle Epoque Week 2013

Here's a little recap of this year's Belle Epoque Week in the swiss village of Kandersteg, happening traditionally in the last week of January. I created some daytime outfits to wear, but unfortunately caught a bad cold, so didn't even get to wear all my costumes! Anyway, here's the images:
Eine kleine Zusammenfassung der diesjaehrigen Belle Epoque Woche, die jaehrlich in der letzten Januarwoche in Kandersteg im Berner Oberland stattfindet! Ich habe einige Tagesoutfits angefertigt, war dann aber leider zu krank um alle meine Outfits zu tragen! Hier ein paar Bilder.

The suit is made of brown english tweed that I bought locally. I used the Laughing Moon #110 and made the jacket and bloomers of view A. I love the big sleeves and the fantastic fit of this jacket!

Der Anzug ist aus braunem englischen Tweed, den ich hier vor Ort gekauft habe. Dazu habe ich das Laughing Moon Schnittmuster #110 verwendet und Jacke und Bloomers nach View A angefertigt. Ich liebe die Puffaermel und den tollen Sitz der Jacke!

I also made a victorian lounging suit inspired by Poiret/Caillot Soeurs, after an original seen at the recent Fashioning Fashion exhibit by LACMA.

Ausserdem habe ich noch einen Lounge Anzug im Stil von Paul Poiret/ Caillot Soeurs genaeht, inspiriert von dem Originalmodell in der Fashioning Fashion Ausstellung vom LACMA.

A Victorian Ball

A bit of catch-up! Here's some pics from last year's Victorian Ball in October 2012!
The first weekend of October brought me to the Czech Republic (first time!) for a Victorian weekend in the sleepy old-fashioned town of Franzensbad. It used to be a fashionable spa town around the early 1900s, having plenty of natural springs and lovely Victorian architecture (a bit like Bath, but more Victorian really).
For the Saturday night ball I finally made the yellow silk natural form ballgown I always wanted!

Etwas zum Nachholen: Hier sind einige Bilder vom viktorianischen Ball letzten Oktober! Fuer ein Wochenende in der tschechischen Grenzstadt Franzensbad, die im 19. Jahrhundert ein beliebter Kurort war, habe ich dieses gelbe Ballkleid im Stil der 1870er angefertigt.

The dress is an original design by myself, but inspired by various fashion plates and originals of the period.

Das Design ist von mir, aber inspiriert von diversen Originalen und Modekupfern der Zeit.

I fancied a gown with a really long, ruffled train, which is worn over a separate balayeuse. I used yellow silk taffeta and matching silk brocade, also various trims like tasseled trim, antique silk velvet ribbon and taffeta ruffles. The long train has a loop to wear on the wrist while dancing. I am quite pleased with the result, but since this was last minute I didn't have enough time to add more trims!

Ich wollte gern ein Kleid mit einer langen Schleppe haben, die ueber einer separaten Unterschleppe (balayeuse) getragen wird. Das Kleid ist aus gelbem Seidentaft sowie passendem Seidenbrokat gemacht, wie es im 19. Jahrhundert sehr beliebt war. Garniert ist es mit diversen Rueschen, Troddeln und antiken Samtbaendern. Die Schleppe hat eine Handschlaufe zum Tanzen. Ich bin recht zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis, aber haette sicherlich noch mehr Dekoration angebracht, wenn dazu Zeit gewesen waere.

1912 steam train ride

Now that I've actually had the time to sew something for myself and attend a costume event I have something new to share!
I made myself a new 1912 outfit to go on a steamtrain ride:

Endlich bin ich mal dazu gekommen etwas fuer mich zu naehen und es zu einer Veranstaltung zu tragen! Dieses Outfit ist fuer eine Fahrt mit dem Mindener Preussenzug entstanden:

The empire waist skirt was made from a lightweight brown summer wool, using an original pattern (by Peerless Patterns). The blouse is actually an original antique, snapped up for £35 at a local antiques fair! A lucky find. Underneath I'm wearing my combinations, a corset cover (both antiques) and my longline corset. The hat was a plain black straw hat which I blocked, shaped and decorated after the tutorial by Lynn McMasters on Yourwardrobeunlockd.com. The tooled leather bag is an antique as well.
I was very content with this outfit and glad I had to do very little sewing. I am so short on time at the moment that I just can't afford to sew for myself rather than others.

Der Rock mit Empiretaille wurde nach einem Originalschnitt aus dem Jahr 1912 gefertigt (von Peerless Patterns) und besteht aus leichter brauner Sommerwolle. Die Bluse ist ein antikes Stueck, dass ich fuer £35 auf einem lokalen Antikmarkt ergattert habe. Darunter trage ich einen Einteiler aus Baumwolle (ebenfalls ein Original),mein Longline Korsett und ein Baumwollhemd darueber (auch antik). Der Hut war ein schlichter schwarzer Strohhut, den ich geblockt und dekoriert habe nach der Anleitung von Lynn McMasters. Die braune Lederhandtasche ist ebenfalls antik.
Ich bin recht zufrieden mit diesem Outfit und es hat Spass gemacht es zusammenzustellen und zu tragen. Ich werde sicherlich noch mehr aus dieser Dekade naehen.
